How to inspire human brilliance in a VUCA world

Sarah Lloyd-HughesSarah Lloyd-Hughes

Gone are the days of linear careers in predictable, steady work environments.

In case there was any doubt, 2020 has shown us that we are well and truly living in a VUCA world (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous). Yet much of the training and development industry has yet to adapt.

Providers persist with teaching dry, theory-driven trainings, when knowledge of what to do as a leader is only a small part of their development needs.

Ginger’s mission is to inspire human brilliance in the leaders we work with. And, by the way, just like JFK’s janitor who said his job was to help put a man on the moon, we believe everyone has the capacity to lead, whatever their role in your company.

Companies urgently need leaders of all levels who are able to:

  • weather challenges with resilience and focus
  • inspire the hearts and minds of their team members and clients
  • act in service of a greater purpose than personal advancement alone
  • build trust and connection with others
  • contribute their best ideas, even when others think differently
  • make decisions autonomously and in line with company strategy
  • galvanise others to learn, grow and act with courage

So, how can training have this depth of impact? By following a few simple principles:

1. Focus on their strengths

When we build on our strengths, we flourish. When we ‘pick at’ and obsess about mitigating for our weaknesses, we lose confidence and the impetus to act.

2. ‘Scare-the-bejesus’ out of your participants

People learn best just beyond their comfort zone. By challenging leaders to be courageously authentic and to act before they feel ready, it helps them to grow.

3. Foster an atmosphere of warmth, admiration and good humour

A great learning environment is one in which people can play, make mistakes and celebrate the achievements of each other.

4. Combine personal and professional

When we develop the whole person, rather than polishing the corporate armour, you access a leader’s rich well of talent.

5. Go on a meaningful adventure together

With a nod to team building raft challenges from days of yore, we know that leaders transform not through theory, but through experience. Now, if you can make that adventure both work-relevant and thrillingly meaningful, you’re onto a winner.

Ginger’s work does all of this by taking leaders on the scariest, most meaningful adventure we can have in the corporate world; being witnessed speaking from the heart about the work-related topics that we care about most.

We call this leadership communications.

We champion and guide leaders to ‘speak human’. To find their story and share it. We help them cultivate their ideas for change and make a greater impact at work and in society, and then galvanise others to do the same.

That’s how to inspire human brilliance.
