Whether you love Donald Trump or despise him, you can learn an awful lot about public speaking from watching how he does... what he does. He commands the attention of every single person in his vicinity. Whether you love this guy or shudder at his words, it’s hard to take your eyes off him. According to Forbes, Donald Trump is the highest paid public speaker in the world with... (are you ready for this?) $1.5 million. The Learning Annex paid Trump this amount 17 times in the two years he delivered at the company’s real estate “wealth expos”. 17 x 1.5 million = I can't even breathe right now.
What's the appeal? Good or bad, right or wrong, Donald Trump's public speaking fascinates people. Absolutely fascinates them.
And he has gained attention. In a big way. Not always in a 'good' way. There is no bad press? Any publicity is good publicity? "There is only one thing worse than being talked about and that is NOT being talked about." - Oscar Wilde
One thing that Trump has right, if you’re not able to gain and hold the attention of your audience, you might as well stop talking because... well because no one is listening. The one thing that Donald Trump has mastered is the art of gaining an audience’s attention.
No one’s going to mistake Donald Trump for anyone else. No one. And that’s as it should be. The most important thing to remember about public speaking is you are the message. Who you are as a person — your character and reputation, experience, values, likes and dislikes — shapes how people hear and interpret what you say. Don’t be objective or impersonal. Be yourself.
The biggest cause of problems in public speaking is that most of us try to be someone we’re not; so to get started with confidence, start with being yourself. If the all-guns-blazing kapow, kapow approach just isn’t your style, don’t speak like that.
Find your own way, your own message, your own voice. Reach deep down and find the ability to be yourself, even if it is vulnerable and even if it feels in some way ‘inappropriate’. Your authenticity connects to your audience’s humanity and allows them to also be authentic. This is the quality that transforms public speaking from “technically very good” to “WOW”.
There is absolutely NO DOUBT where Trump stands on any issue. NONE. He's ascribed to Churchill's advice “When you have an important point to make, don’t try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time — a tremendous whack.”
Once you have taken a stand, it’s the force of your self belief that will show your audience that you really mean it. An authentic speaker will stick to their message, even if nobody else seems to agree. This is the moment where you get to change the world. And it’s your belief, your confidence and your good intention that will allow that change to happen.
If YOU value it (the message of your speech), then the audience will value it also. No gimmicks or games or catchy cliches necessary; simply being genuine packs more of a wallop than the “hard sell”. Stop thinking of it as pushing your agenda and start to see it as allowing the space for people to connect with the full power of your message.
Freshness: The quality that gives a ZING to any talk. Freshness allows a speaker to be unique, spontaneous and memorable. Donald Trump may be a lot of things: blunt, arrogant, willing to buck the system, self-serving, or dead-wrong. But he is anything BUT boring. In order to stay a relevant public speaker, we must find our "fresh".
We’re taught that we are to stay in the confines of our social roles, hiding away our authenticity; freshness may be an awful lot to ask. Sometimes it’s difficult to even smile when speaking, let alone add a new element of “fresh”. Freshness is all about a grand leap outside of what is comfortable. As Eleanor Roosevelt said “You must do the thing you cannot do.” Make sure your fresh ideas are relevant, unique and learning orientated and you’ll be sure to engage your audience. Through this freshness you can touch the very hearts of your audience and leave them with a very powerful and unforgettable message.
Of course, it isn’t enough to command an audience’s attention...
The goal of speaking is to bring about a change in your audience. A change in the way people think and feel and act. A change for the better, not the worse. What the world needs now, more than ever, is inspiration. And the most powerful way I’ve found of inspiring others is to stand up and speak from the heart. It’s known in some circles as public speaking. And it’s more powerful than any video, email or tweet could ever be.
